Structural Size Checker

Estimate preliminary column sizes and beam depths for quick space planning

1. Building Parameters

Reinforced concrete is standard for general frames, while structural steel allows lighter members and longer clear spans.
Building usage determines the structural live load requirements (Residential: 2.0 kN/m², Office: 3.0 kN/m², Commercial: 4.0-5.0 kN/m²).

Structural Analysis & Warnings

Long Span Warning

Span exceeds 8m. Consider deeper beams, post-tensioned slabs, or adding intermediate columns to limit deflection.

High-Rise Column Warning

For buildings above 8 floors, columns should typically be at least 500x500 mm to support gravity loads and resist lateral wind loads safely.

Grid Aspect Ratio Notice

Grid ratio X/Y or Y/X exceeds 2.0. This behaves as a one-way slab system, where beams in the short direction carry significantly more loads.

Preliminary Design Rules Used
  • Concrete Beam Depth: L / 12 - L / 15 (width is 1/2 to 2/3 of depth)
  • Steel Beam Depth: L / 18 - L / 22
  • Concrete Column Size: (Floors * 50) + 200 mm
  • Steel Column Size: (Floors * 30) + 150 mm

Engineering Notice

This tool provides preliminary estimates only. Final structural design must be verified by a qualified and licensed structural engineer.
